It's common to hear that flu and illnesses creep upon us more frequently when we are in a state of stress.
The physical side of Yoga supports the immune system in ways I will explain below and of course, our Yoga Nidra at the end of class, guides our body away from a stressed state and into a relaxed state.
In this kind of state, the body is so calm that all systems of the body (respiratory, digestive etc) are working at their optimal, hence the body is in a much better condition to fight off any illnesses!
How does Yoga support Immunity?
The lymph system is responsible for moving fluid with toxins, waste material throughout the body to then eliminate.
The lymphatic system, linked with our immune system, is unlike the cardiac system in that it doesn't have a pump to propel lymphatic flow and fluid throughout the body. So the best way to help detoxify the body and move the lymphatic fluid along is up and down movement e.g running, skipping, and dynamic stretching - Yoga!
So a frequent Yoga practice is truly one of the best ways of providing support to the immune system on a day-to-day basis.
The best moments and poses for healthy Lymphatic system
Yoga Twists aid in encourage detoxification of toxins from the body, inversions promote a healthy blood flow, chest openers help bring space for the lungs and of breath, which will in turn aid in clearing congestion!
